Frequently Asked Questions

natural ~ flexible ~ affordable

I’m interested! What happens next?

Please contact me for an informal chat about your needs.

For portrait sessions, we will discuss what kind of portraits you're looking for and talk about you and what kind of session will work best for you.

If you would like to book me for a wedding or other event, we can meet over a coffee and you can look through my portfolio of previous work.

If you decide that you would like to go ahead, we will agree the date and location and I will prepare a booking confirmation form which will be posted to you for your signature. Once I receive your signed booking form I will confirm that your date has been held. (Weddings and other events also require a £200 deposit).

For weddings and events we will meet again at the venue, usually within 6 weeks of the big day, to run through all the details and discuss locations for particular photographs that you would like taken.

Please feel free to share with me any images you've torn out of magazines or found on the internet. Showing examples is the best way to communicate with me about the type of look and mood you want for your pictures.

Can we have all of the photographs that you take?

My rate allows for a certain amount of editing time and based on this I am able to guarantee you a certain number of images as a minimum. I will, of course, be taking more than that but I can assure you that a large proportion of them will be a combination of:

~ shots where people have their eyes closed or they aren't looking at the camera
~ candid photographs where I have caught people talking or eating and where they have an unflattering expression on
  their face!
~ duplicate shots that I have taken so that I can chose the absolute best shot in terms of exposure, facial expressions,
  posture, etc.
~ shots where people have walked into the frame unexpectedly, etc

Please be reassured that nothing great will be deleted!

Can we choose the black and white images?

Of course! Initially I will select the shots that I think will work best in black and white and provide you with those. But of course, if after seeing the final images there are others that you would like in black and white as well you only have to ask. That's no problem at all.

How does a lifestyle portrait session work?

We will plan for 90 minutes per session but I am happy to be flexible with this, particularly if you have young children to include. I don't book back-to-back sessions in order to allow for unpredictable moments, such as children who haven’t yet woken from their nap or for an unexpected outburst. My goal is that you are relaxed and not worrying about time constraints. The important thing is that we get the pictures that you want.

I prefer to use as much natural light as possible as it is more flattering to skin tones. Late afternoon sessions are best when shooting outdoors. Morning and early afternoon sessions are best for shooting indoors.

Your session can take place wherever you like: your home, a park, a walk in the woods - anywhere that you are familiar and comfortable with so you can just be yourselves. If young children are involved, I recommend that we start at home and that any outdoor locations used are close by.

If you have requested an outdoor location for the shoot and the weather is bad, we can reschedule for another day. That’s no problem.

What to wear? The most important thing is that you are all comfortable and warm enough if we are outside. Following that, I highly recommend that you avoid clothes with text or large logos as these will be distracting in the final images. Solid neutral or primary colours work best. For babies, knitted blankets and hats are warm and comforting. When in doubt, have a few options to hand just in case.

Above all else, make sure everyone is clean, fed, and ready to have some fun!

You may want to think about preparing a few different activities to have fun with during the shoot such as bubble blowing or other games that you all enjoy.

I will do very little in the way of posing you all and will be aiming to just watch you doing your thing and capture natural smiles wherever possible.

Within about two weeks of your session, your CD will be posted to you and you will receive a link and password to visit your own online gallery so that you can make the choices for your prints in your own time. Feel free to share this link with friends and family. Once you've viewed your session and chosen your favourite shots, you can order the prints that are included in your package plus any others if you want to. You will receive the prints by post within two weeks of placing your order.

How do we decide what photographs we would like taken at our wedding?

I will provide you with an example shot list which you can use as a starting point. You can, or course, add/remove shots from this as you wish. It’s your day and your needs and desires are my priority.

My specialty is in capturing the spontaneous, fun and intimate moments and if you choose me as your photographer I would imagine that those are the types of photographs that you are really hoping for. Therefore, when it comes to the group shots I strongly advise that the list of group combinations is limited to no more than eight groups. Your day will fly by and I’m sure that you will want to spend the maximum amount of time relaxing with friends and family rather than posing for formal photographs.

Think about what you will use the photographs for in the future. Which group combinations are most important to you? Which ones will you choose to sit on your mantelpiece? I will always do my best to ensure that there are candid images of each of the guests as a record of their attendance.

Groups larger than 8-12 people don’t work particularly well as each head will be small even on quite large prints. I would only recommend a picture of everyone in attendance if there is a high vantage point that can be used so that everyone’s face is visible.

We will have a good discussion about what you want and what you don’t want in plenty of time before the wedding so that we are both clear about your expectations and so that you are not disappointed.
